Maravelia Boat

The name Maravelia of our boat comes from the homonymous cave Maravelia, where its entrance is a few meters away from the old monastery of Saint George just above Navagio. For more than 500 years, monks have lowered their boats inside the Maravelia cave towards the sea where the cave leads.
Monastery of Agios Georgios in Gremna The area of Krimna (or in Gremna), in the NW of Zakynthos, an imposing and majestic place, causes the visitor awe and upliftment of the soul. Here is also the world-famous “Navagio” “Wreck”, one of the most imposing landscapes of Greece.

History

The Monastery of Agios Georgios was founded here in 1535 by Hieromonk Makarios and Monk Varlaam Beletis, where eminent ecclesiastical men practiced from time to time, such as e.g. from 1549 to 1554 the Hieromonk Gerasimos Notaras (later Saint Gerasimos, patron of Kefallinia), but also the Zakynthian Theologian and Teacher of the Genus Monk Pachomios Rousanos (1508-+1553).
The catholicon of the Monastery was decorated in 1606 with frescoes by Loukas Romanos, which -unfortunately- are not preserved today. The peculiar tower of the Monastery began to be built in 1561 for the defense of the Monks from pirates.
The Library of the Monastery was great and famous. Unfortunately, the manuscript Codes of Pachomius, a monk there (which remained a valuable legacy after his death in Gremna), were later fled by the Venetian Admiral Nani to Italy. Today (unfortunately for us) they belong to the Marcian Library in Venice and are known to scholars as the Nanian Codices.
