The “Navagio” -Shipwreck of Zakynthos or “Panagiotis”, is a shipwreck on the isolated coast of Ai Giorgi, Zakynthos, and today it is one of the most interesting sights of the island.
The ship was spotted on 5 October 1980 by a Maritime Economic Police patrol boat and found to be carrying contraband cigarettes. The value of the approximately 2,000 boxes of cigarettes was estimated at 30 million drachmas. The crew argued that, since the ship had been traveling between Kefalonia and Zakynthos for three days due to bad weather conditions.Until then, the coast was called Ai George, while now it is widely known simply as “Navagio”. The beach is in an inaccessible place and can only be reached by sea or air.
